HBL and Mastercard Unveil Business Debit Cards to Power Pakistan’s SMEs
KARACHI, August 27, 2025 – Habib Bank Limited (HBL) has teamed up with Mastercard to roll out two new debit cards designed exclusively for small and medium enterprises (SMEs), entrepreneurs, and sole proprietors. The Classic and World Business Debit Cards aim to streamline transactions for business owners while accelerating Pakistan’s shift toward a cashless economy.
Why the Launch Matters
SMEs are the backbone of Pakistan’s economy, representing over 5 million businesses that contribute nearly 40% of GDP and employ one-third of the national workforce. Yet many of these businesses remain underserved by traditional banking services.
HBL, already a leader in SME lending with over PKR 100 billion in loans disbursed, is expanding beyond credit offerings by providing a digital-first payment tool that simplifies day-to-day operations.
A Push for Digital Banking
The newly introduced debit cards give businesses faster, more secure payment options and reduce reliance on cash – a critical step for financial inclusion in a country where cash transactions still dominate.
As Pakistan’s largest debit card issuer, HBL says the move is part of its long-term strategy to bring businesses into the formal economy and support digital transformation.
The Launch Event
The unveiling took place at HBL Tower in Karachi, attended by top executives including:
- Muhammad Nassir Salim, President & CEO, HBL
- Aamir Kureshi, Head of Products, Transactional Services & Solution Delivery, HBL
- J.K. Khalil, Division President, East Arabia, Mastercard
