Police Gets Two-days Physical Remand of Shahbaz Gill over “Sedition Charges”

Islamabad: A court in Islamabad has allowed two days of physical remand of Senior PTI leader Shahbaz Gill on police request after taking him into custody on 10 August 2022.

Senior PTI leader Shahbaz Gill was arrested from Islamabad on Tuesday, 9 August 2022 on sedition charges against sensitive state institutions. A case is filed against him by the state government under articles 505, 120, 120-B, 153, 153-A, 124-A, and 131 of the Pakistan Penal Code. He is presented before a federal court a day after his arrest.

The court approved a two-day physical remand of Gill after hearing statements from both parties. He will be presented before the court again on Friday, 12, as the magistrate court ordered. The court also ordered a physical examination of Gill. The latter’s counsel opposed the request of police on seeking Gill’s physical remand.

While talking to the media, Shahbaz Gill refused all the allegations saying “My remarks are from a patriot Pakistani and the one who loved his armed forces”. He further clarified that “bureaucracy officials” were the actual subject of his remarks.

Chairman PTI Imran Khan and senior leaders condemn the arrest of Shahbaz Gill. Khan said that the government is trying to fear people and rigging elections through such “fascist tactics” however it will not work. PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry said that Gill was tortured during his arrest at Bani Gala Chowk however the federal government denies it.

In an emergency meeting held on 9 August chaired by PTI Chairman Imran Khan, the party decided to take the matter to Islamabad high court. Khan has called another meeting today on 10 August 2022 to form a strategy to deal with the situation. According to sources, important decisions will be taken in this meeting regarding the protest and upcoming strategies amid the situation of Shahbaz Gill’s arrest.
