Karachi Reports Fifth Polio Case This Year

In the southern port city of Karachi, health authorities have reported the fifth polio case of the year in Pakistan. According to reports, a 31-month-old child in the Gajru union council of Karachi East has been diagnosed with the polio disease.

The spokesperson for the Ministry of Health noted that the same union council had reported the fourth polio case of the year. Emphasizing that the polio virus tends to affect children with weak immune systems, the spokesperson highlighted ongoing collaborative efforts with international partners to eliminate the disease.

Polio, a highly infectious and debilitating disease that spreads through contaminated water or food, invades the nervous system and can cause total paralysis within hours. The contagious virus thrives in the borderlands between Pakistan and Afghanistan, where militants have targeted and even killed anti-polio teams.
